On Wednesday 12th November 2025 I had the great honour of attending the official opening and blessing of Orchard Lodge at Thornage Hall, an occasion filled with warmth, pride and genuine community spirit. I was invited to represent Norfolk Freemasons following our significant donation towards the Orchard Lodge project, and it was a privilege to see first-hand the positive impact this new building will have.
Thornage Hall, situated in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, provides supported living and meaningful day opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. The community currently supports 28 full-time residents, and a further 30 day attendees who visit daily for activities, skills development, creative work and independent-living opportunities. Orchard Lodge now increases residential capacity from 28 to 33, expanding the reach and support the Hall can provide.
The event itself was both dignified and joyful.
- Tom Fitzalan Howard opened the proceedings with a heartfelt speech that captured the spirit of the day.
- Rosie Dunthorne, CEO of Thornage Hall, welcomed guests and outlined the growing needs the Lodge will meet.
- Rt Revd Graham Usher, Bishop of Norwich, led the blessing, supported beautifully by several residents who took part with pride and confidence.
- Finally, Lady Dannatt MBE, the Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk, formally opened Orchard Lodge, marking a significant moment in the Hall’s long and compassionate history.
What struck me most was the atmosphere among the residents. They radiated confidence and happiness, clearly enjoying the opportunity to welcome so many visitors into their home. Their pride in their community, the gardens, the workshops and the new Lodge was unmistakable.
Thornage Hall has always stood for dignity, inclusion and meaningful living. Orchard Lodge strengthens that mission even further. On behalf of Norfolk Freemasons, it was inspiring to witness the difference that charitable support can make, not just in bricks and mortar, but in the smiles, voices and shared celebrations of the people who call Thornage Hall home
