Supporting Young Talent: Norfolk Freemasons Back Norwich’s Rising Shooting Stars

Recently, members of the Norfolk Masonic Clay Pigeon Shooting Committee visited Norwich City Target Club to present a donation of £500 in support of their Talented Junior Athlete Bursary Fund. This contribution represents a direct investment in young people across Norfolk who are striving to compete at the highest levels in air rifle and air pistol shooting.

Norwich City Target Club has long been a cornerstone of precision shooting in the region, developing athletes who go on to represent Norfolk and increasingly the wider UK on the national stage. The club provides structured coaching, access to facilities and a pathway for progression in what is a highly technical and disciplined sport. However, like many niche sports, shooting carries a significant financial burden that can act as a barrier to entry and progression.

The bursary fund exists to bridge that gap. It enables talented young athletes from Norwich and surrounding areas to attend competitions that would otherwise be financially out of reach. Travel, accommodation, entry fees and equipment costs can quickly mount, placing considerable strain on families, particularly those from lower income backgrounds. Without support, many promising athletes would simply be unable to compete.

The impact of this funding is already clear. In just the past two weeks, several athletes supported by the bursary attended both the British Championships and the Schools National Finals, two of the most significant events in the junior shooting calendar.

At the British Championships, five athletes reached the finals, with two going on to be crowned British Champions in their respective categories. This is no small achievement. Reaching a national final requires not only technical ability but also composure, consistency and mental resilience under pressure.

At the Schools National Finals, the results were equally impressive. Six athletes attended and returned with a total of ten medals between them, demonstrating both depth and quality within the team. These are outcomes that place Norfolk firmly on the map within the competitive shooting community.

Behind these successes is not just talent but opportunity. Opportunity that has been made possible, in part, through community support and charitable giving.

Shooting, unlike many mainstream sports, is not easily accessible. The cost of specialist equipment alone can be prohibitive, and the need for safe, regulated facilities adds another layer of complexity. Yet it is also a sport that offers unique opportunities. It is inclusive, allowing individuals to compete on a level playing field regardless of many physical limitations. For some young people, particularly those who may not thrive in traditional team sports, it provides a genuine pathway to achievement, confidence and recognition.

This is where community initiatives such as the Norfolk Masonic Clay Pigeon Shooting Committee’s fundraising efforts make a tangible difference. Whether through raffles, organised shooting events or lodge based fundraising, the money raised goes directly into projects like this, where it has an immediate and measurable impact.

It is easy to overlook how those contributions add up, but collectively they create real change. For the young athletes supported by this bursary, it can mean the difference between watching from the sidelines and stepping onto the firing line at a national competition. It can be the difference between potential and performance.

Importantly, this support also sends a clear message to these young people. Their efforts are recognised, valued and worth investing in. That sense of backing from the wider community can be just as powerful as the financial support itself.

As Freemasons across Norfolk continue their charitable work, this example stands as a reminder of what those efforts achieve. The next time a raffle ticket is offered or a fundraising event is organised, it is worth remembering exactly where that money can go and who it can help.

No talented young athlete should have to turn away from representing their county due to a lack of funds. Thanks to continued generosity and support, that is becoming less of a reality for the young shooters of Norwich.

And when you hear the familiar call to support the raffle, it is worth keeping in mind that this is exactly the kind of opportunity you are helping to create.
