Past Officers

Union Lodge Number 52 in the register of the United Grand Lodge of England is the oldest Lodge in the Province of Norfolk. The Lodge has a proud history stretching back to 1736 when it first received its warrant on the 24th of June 1736.

Our members
The ages range from early 30s to late 80s and come from all walks of life. With nearly 300 years of history Union Lodge’s past members include Princes, Mayors, Magistrates and the Clergy, Plumbers and Admirals of the fleet to tillers of the soil. There is always a warm welcome to all at Union Lodge.

The cost of membership:
A one-off joining fee to Grand Lodge of £74.40 and a one-off initiation fee to cover Lodge costs of £35.00. The annual Lodge subscriptions (which cover the annual Grand Lodge fee, a Provincial Grand Lodge fee, rent for our meeting room and admin of the Lodge) is £235.00 and this can be paid monthly once you have joined. This subscription fee is adjusted in accordance with the month you join. In the Lodge room the collection of Alms is taken, generally a couple of pounds. We dine after the meeting, the cost of which is £22.50, and a raffle is held; tickets range from £1 to £5. Therefore, with the estimated annual cost of around £450 which is great value for the enjoyment you will receive from your membership.

The Meetings.
We meet in the Le Strange room at 47 St Giles Street, Norwich, NR2 1JR on the first Tuesday of the month between September and April. The meetings start promptly at 6.00pm and usually end around 10pm. However, should you be held up and arrive late you will still be welcome to join us. Better to arrive late than not at all!

Union Lodge Social Calendar.
It is common for the current years new ‘Master’ to announce a social calendar of events for the membership and their friends and family to get together. These are usually held in the Spring/Summer months when the Lodge does not meet.
Annually the Lodge holds a Ladies Night, (better known as a dinner dance,) we also hold a White Table dinner. All of the social events enables the Lodge and prospective members get together for a meal, this introduces our friends to the members and helps to increase the bond of friendship.

Visiting other Lodges
Once you are a member you will be able to visit Lodges all over the world providing you have permission from The United Grand Lodge of England. This can be arranged by your Lodge Secretary and him along with the Lodge Membership Officer, will help with advice. Locally you will be able to visit any Lodge. This can be done by booking in with the Lodge Secretary whose details will be on our website.

Local Charitable donations
Supporting local charities is at the heart of Freemasonry. Grand Lodge manages the Masonic Charitable Foundation which supports large projects which need help. Nearer home in Norfolk we have the Norfolk Freemasons Charitable Fund. This fund exists to support the projects that need a large sum which the local Lodge could not raise on its own.
In Union Lodge each year our Worshipful Master (Lodge Chairman) will nominate his chosen charity and the members get behind him to raise funds. We also support other worthy causes, and our members are encouraged to suggest projects which would benefit from the Lodges support.
